A new time delay test signal

If you have horns and woofers the problem is to where to place the horn fore and aft to get the best performance . With electronic XOs the question is how do I set the woofer time delay? With coaxial speakers ( Altec 604 and 605 ) how do I build an XO with the proper woofer time delay?
The technique developed to use this Test Signal gives results down to the 50 uSec level.

Very Interesting Don ! Thank You For posting that ! I thought you were working on the 604G ? Have you settled on a cabinet for your 605's ? If I remember I think it was a 620,not sure though. :2thumbsup:

My L & R cab's are Carmels with a 15" hole for a single 605. I added a port : 8"x3"x4" and sealed the box. The vol is about 6 cu ft. The center is also a 605, in a cab similar to an 861, 3.5 cu ft and ported. So that is why I developed the XO for 605s.
I have worked with Seadweller on an XO design for his 604Gs. Since he is in FL and I am in Chicago it was slow going, and we did not complete the project. I feel bad about that.
The test signal is a result of that work. So I wanted to share it with others. The test tone icon is after the schematic and has volume, FF, and Rewind controls. Your computer audio level control also is in the chain, so make sure it is turned up.

    Don,

Is this test pulse just useful for a 1600hz crossover? For example could it be used to evaluate a Valencia system with the crossover at 1200hz?

    Thanks,

Thanks Don ! Yes I remember now, Seadweller threw in the towel. That is very disappointing to see that. I remember you were re-doing the XO a few times IIRC.

I never like to see that. Don't feel bad it wasn't you that gave up.And I'm sure you would have seen it through if he wanted to continue.

My question also as in previous post. This test signal is it strictly designed for a 1600 Hz XO, or can it be used with others ?

Re: A new time delay test signal

The power density curve is flat up to 2kHz where it is 3dB down. At 4.8 kHz it is -40dB.
See the 4th set of curves on my web site
So I would say "use this test signal for all XOs 3kHz and below.
Try it and let us know.
